325: The missing parts of history teaching with CARGO Classroom
CARGO is led by Lawrence Hoo, a POET and Charles Golding filmmaker and creative director. From their own experiences in school and from their observations today, they understood that there are large parts missing from the History that is taught in schools across the UK. These missing parts include:
The perspectives of individuals of African and African Diaspora descent.
Recognition of the resilience, contributions and visionary leadership of individuals of African and African Diaspora descent.
CARGO Classroom resources are made so that these stories could be included in the History that is taught in schools at Key Stage 3. The lessons use poetry, film and illustrations to help pupils engage with the lives they are learning about. The lessons have been designed so that they can either be taught in a sequence, or experienced individually.

323: Big Education Challenge – £1 million prize fund to help transform education
Big Change’s brand new challenge prize – Big Education Challenge. The £1 million prize fund seeks to reward bold ideas with the potential to transform education. The Challenge is split into two prizes – the Groundbreaker Prize (for youth-led innovation from applicants aged 18-25 with a bold idea) and the Gamechanger Prize (for experienced innovators of any age with a track record of leading innovative approaches with social impact). The prize launched in November 2022 and applications will close in February 2023.
The prize was launched with new statistics from Big Change showing:
Key stats
• 65% of UK adults think that the education system doesn’t prepare young people for their futures
• 75% believe our country needs a bold, long-term vision for education that all parts of society have contributed to.
• 76% say that ideas about improving education need to come from grassroots communities including teachers, parents and students.
The new statistics reinforce the need for change – which is exactly what the Challenge hopes to achieve.

Caitlin Ross is Head of Impact for education charity Big Change. Caitlin leads on the identification, funding and support of Big Change’s pioneering project partners. She also leads on Big Change’s impact strategy, making sure they gather the insights we need to keep growing and learning, both as a charity and as a funder. Caitlin has a frontline background in microfinance and in youth work, working on the ground with organisations in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. She brings her experience delivering scalable, impact-focused interventions to Big Change’s grant giving and impact work to support pioneers who are helping young people thrive in life.
Liz Robinson is CEO of Multi-Academy Trust, Big Education.
Liz’s motivation comes from a profound belief that schools can play a transformative role in children’s lives, but also in shaping whole communities. Social justice and wider change underpin her views that school simply must be about the whole child, the whole family and the whole community.
As the head at Surrey Square for many years, Liz used values as a key driver to redefine the purpose of the school and radically reshape the culture and approaches. She is exceptionally proud of how the school continues to develop and innovate.
Liz has deep expertise and a particular interest in capacity development and growing leadership. Her philosophy is based on a client-centred approach, actively empowering others into thoughtful action. She created The Big Leadership Adventure, our flagship programme supporting changemaker leaders in the sector.
Liz co-founded Big Education to be a place where those who believe in more radical change in the sector can come together; to collaborate, share, challenge and encourage one another. Let’s do more, together.
As mum to two young girls, Liz works flexibly to manage her role. She advocates for and seeks to model an authentic, reflective and relational approach to leadership.

322: Kinesthetic learning in pre-K to 2nd grade with Walkabouts
Walkabouts are on-demand adventures that transform math, language arts, and reading content into short, movement-rich activities for pre-K to 2nd grade students. Teachers report that Walkabouts help build students’ confidence, improve self-awareness, and enhance self-control. This evidence-based online curriculum supplement makes it easy for teachers and parents to create kinesthetic learning activities — fun lessons that bring key concepts to life through active learning techniques. Walkabouts are even correlated to the state standards (plus Head Start and NAEYC standards) teachers already use. Plus, unlike traditional videos or brain breaks, Walkabouts are dynamic and different each time they play. Watch as a Walkabout is created and played.
As a kinesthetic learner, Dr. Julian Reed – Walkabouts co-founder – remembers his active classes in school most fondly. He based Walkabouts on scientific research that proves kids who move more perform better academically. He hopes to kick start a new generation of children who stay active and learn at the same time.

321: Global Girl Project with Julia Lynch
Julia Lynch founded Global Girl Project in 2014, after over twenty years working as a Community Social Worker and Therapist. During this time Julia traveled extensively, including time spent in Tanzania and Jamaica providing community and health services to local at-risk communities. This work ignited her passion for supporting marginalized girls, and GGP was born. As a woman of colour who grew up in a small, white town Julia learned from an early age how imperative it is to see yourself represented in positions of power and leadership. Since that time, Julia has worked tirelessly to not only be a role model for her global girls, but to train them on how to be role models and leaders to others within their communities.
As the Founding Director, Julia works in partnership with NGOs and schools globally to implement and run leadership programs and initiatives for girls throughout the developing world. Julia not only works directly with our scholars online, but also runs the day-to-day operations of GGP from the United Kingdom.
Through GGP programming the impact in each local partner country has been evident. From an increase in self-confidence, leadership skills and self-perceived power and autonomy from the girls, to a shift in perception of gender roles and capabilities from local community members, the impact that is being created is truly global in scope.
