215: Illuminated Life School with Heidi DeCoux

Heidi DeCoux is a serial entrepreneur that has built four businesses to high-six figure status and sold two of them, has appeared in magazines and websites like Forbes, is the author of an Amazon best-selling book on marketing, and president of the Palmas Del Mar chapter of Uncommon Entrepreneurs.

She’s a marketing maven and an investor, but her real passion, the thing that keeps her up at night, is her commitment to revolutionize the public school system through the non-profit organization that she and her husband founded, Illuminated Life School.

The Mission

The Illuminated Life School Network cultivates a loving community where diverse young people develop their unique genius, forge compassionate connections to others and master 22nd century skills, equipping them to thrive with meaning and purpose throughout their lives.

Physical Schools With a Virtual Presence

The Illuminated Life School Network serves students from birth to graduation in physical schools with a virtual presence. Students have the option to move between a physical school and an online academy, as meets their needs. Follow the links for more information on attending, opening, or converting your school to the Illuminated Life School model of education.

Their Values

Loving Community | We cultivate a loving, nurturing and nourishing community where all students and families are welcomed and supported, and where our students learn to engage respectfully and generously with each other and the world, developing a spirit of responsibility and commitment to service.

Identity | Our students develop a strong sense of identity, built on the richness of their racial and cultural history and traditions, which fosters in our students the confidence and resilience to fully express their unique genius.

22nd Century Skills | Our students are empowered to forge the future through mastery of the world’s most in-demand skills, including emotional intelligence, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, racial consciousness, servant-leadership and more.

Rigorous Inquiry | Our students develop the ability to identify and analyze complex issues and to research and design compelling solutions, a process which will prepare them for excellence in higher learning and every profession (from Entrepreneur, to plumber, to neurosurgeon, to artist, to stay-at-home dad, to President).

Racial Justice | Our students become anti-racist leaders who dismantle systems of oppression and realize racial justice throughout the world. Our schools are anti-racist organizations eradicating institutional racism in education, working in solidarity towards the liberation of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

214: Your 3 Eyes with Dr. Megan Sweet

Dr. Megan Sweet is an author, speaker, and systems-thinker who has been in education for more than twenty-five years. Through her extensive experience leading personal and system-wide change, Megan has come to believe that when we approach our challenges from the inside-out, by building a supportive and heart-centered connection with ourselves first, we have the confidence and resilience to tackle the important work of transforming our lives and communities.

The 3 Eyes support us to see our lives, our thoughts, and our experiences more clearly.

When we use them in school, they help us to understand our context in more depth.

Megan’s Philosophy

I believe that the most powerful forces for innovation in our schools are the people–educators, students, and families.

I KNOW true change is possible if we invest in our educators and school communities and then get out of their way.

213: Educational travel with Garrett & Mandi Oler

Garrett & Mandi Oler discuss how travel and enrolling their children into a bilingual school has enhanced their educational experiences, confidence and world citizenship.

Garrett & Mandi are a married couple that love to help people travel abundantly – and affordably – with their families. They cringe every time they hear parents say that travel is a luxury only for the “lucky,” and are on a mission to change that mindset.

We discuss:

  • Making friends abroad
  • Learning in a foreign language
  • Whole family trip planning
  • The skills learned from foreign travel
  • Know what you want to experience in trip
  • Know the cost of a trip

Through their online course, Frequent Traveler Academy, they significantly shorten the learning curve and effectively cut through the clutter of rewards programs, frequent flier status and budgeting tactics so that students know what to immediately focus on to give them the best results (including free travel).

Between them and their students, they have amassed over two million credit card points, flown over 500,000 miles and visited 10 different countries – all using the simple strategies that they figured out by trial and error.

Garret and Mandi live in Utah with their two sons, who love to join them on their adventures – and even planned a few of their own!
